The suspension system has an impact on both the driver’s control and the comfort of the passengers. While the dampers stop the wheels from bouncing up and down, the springs allow the wheels to move up to absorb road imperfections and lessen jolting. The wheels are held in place by a number of mechanical links.
In very simple terms, a coil spring is a big version of the spring you see in clicky pens that sit just above your wheel. It expands as the wheel moves down and compresses as the wheel moves up, to keep the car body reasonably level. Otherwise your ride would be very bumpy and wobbly indeed, especially when you drive over rough or uneven ground.
A broken coil results in your car’s suspension angles of travel ebing mis-aligned. This ends up causing components to scrape or knock against each other. OUCH!
During winter, ice, snow, cold temperatures and salt on the roads can cause accelerated corrosion of a coil spring.
You cannot drive a vehicle which has any element of the suspension that is broken. This could cause more damage to your vehicle in the long-term.
